I created the News Literacy guide in response to concerns about the spread of misleading or false information, particularly through online “news” sources.
The guide consists of a introductory video that introduces strategies for spotting misleading news, an exercise that helps students develop their evaluation strategies, suggestions for further reading for students, and resources for educators.
My research into news literacy has informed workshops I have given at the MSU Libraries, the Indiana Information Literacy Colloquium, and WILU (Canada). My slides and workshop materials from IILC and WILU are also on the guide.
Tools used: Libguides, Powtoon (video creation), Camtasia (sound recording), MediaSpace (video hosting), Google Forms (quiz), Google Docs (group exercises)
